Once Upon a Time season five premiered this past Sunday and picked up right where season four left off. All summer fans of Once Upon a Time were left wondering what has become of Emma Swan. The last that fans saw of Emma was a black vortex forming around her as she became the new Dark One.
In the opening scene of season five, we see that Emma has crossed paths with Sir Lancelot once before in her childhood and is warned against pulling Excalibur out of its stone. Coincidently this occurs while she’s at the movie theater watching Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. Fast forward to the present, Emma has been transported to the Enchanted Forest and is starting to go mad because of her new powers. She’s being tempted by the power of the Dark One to become evil and tries all that she can to resist.
Emma knows the only person that can help her is Merlin and so begins her quest to find him. With the vision of Rumplestiltskin as her guide, Emma seeks the willow of the wisps. Before Emma can grab a hold of it, Merida captures the wisps. Merida explains her mission to Emma and agrees to give Emma the wisps once she’s done with it.
In Storybrooke our heroes are trying to figure out how they can find Emma. The Apprentice gives them a wand that can open a portal between realms but Regina is unable to use it. Hook and Henry turn to Zelena to open the portal but Zelena has her own intentions for it. Zelena frees herself from Regina’s magical gauntlet and kidnaps Robin Hood for leverage.
In the middle of town Zelena opens the portal but is weakened in doing so. Regina takes this opportunity to use the portal for the heroes’ advantage and replaces her magical gauntlet back on Zelena. The heroes along with Granny and the dwarves are transported to the Enchanted Forest. They arrive just in time to stop Emma from trying to kill Merida.
Emma then gives the Dark One’s dagger to Regina, knowing that only Regina would be the one who would do what is necessary in order to stop her. Our favorite citizens of Storybrooke are then encountered by King Arthur and his knights. Apparently King Arthur has been expecting our heroes. Emma and her family are then escorted to Camelot.
After entering Camelot viewers find the heroes transported back to Storybrooke but six weeks after they left. They have to memory of what happened in Camelot and discover their worst fear has come true. Emma is now the full fledged Dark One.
Obviously another curse has been casted. It will be interesting to see the pieces of the puzzle revealed. Let’s all point out the elephant in the room in this scene. Zelena is seen to be one of those who have been transported back from the Enchanted Forest, yet she was not one of them who went there with everyone else. So how did Zelena get to the Enchanted Forest? Another point of interest is finding out that the Dark One’s dagger is part of Excalibur. Maybe that has something to do with Emma becoming evil. Only episodes will tell what really happened in those six weeks.
