Last week on 'Gotham', 'the Joker' was introduced and gave the audience a glimpse of how the young man started to turn onto a bad path. This past Monday, the show focused more on its core storylines, and less on the villains.
The 'Red Hood Gang' was introduced in this episode, a bunch of guys who rob banks, but throw some of the money back to the public. One of the young men starts wearing a red hood, growing very cocky whilst wearing it and drawing attention to him and his gang members. Detectives Gordon and Bullock get on the case, which ends up being fairly simple to solve. The members slowly turn and kill one another, before the police catch them trying to rob one final bank and kill the remaining three members.
With a simple case, the show had an opportunity to focus on important storylines such as The Penguin, Fish Mooney and Bruce Wayne. The Penguin's club has been spiraling down hill, and news from his staff that the is out of liquor does not sit well, especially when he is told that Maroni runs all the liquor supply on their side of the city, making it impossible for The Penguin to order stock from a man who wants him dead. Mooney's former bodyguard Butch helps out the Penguin, getting him liquor by having a few fake policemen roll up in cruisers and send the two stock men home.
While that happens Fish Mooney meets with the man managing the facility she is currently in. It comes to her attention that the place she resides cuts off people's body parts and sells them. The man she meets with is not the one who owns the establishment, the owner happens to be a man called 'The Doctor', while Mooney is upset and refuses to compromise, she is told they will take her eyes whether she resists or not. Mooney thinks up a third option and spoons one of her eyes out, stepping on it after, making it impossible to sell a set to anyone.
Lastly, Alfred’s old military friend Mr. Payne visits the Wayne manor. The man is gritty and helps teach Bruce how to fight and they all share stories over a few bottles of wine. It's uncovered that Alfred had indeed killed people in his past, but he makes it a point to tell Payne he is not that person anymore. During his last night, Payne begins stealing artifacts from Wayne Manor and is caught by Alfred. Unexpectedly, Alfred is stabbed by his old friend and left for dead. Bruce Wayne runs down and calls an ambulance upon seeing his butler nearly unconscious and bleeding on his floor. Detective Gordon visits Alfred in the hospital, and while he is there so is Bruce Wayne, the young man hugs Detective Gordon as is he is the only lifeline Wayne will have left.
The end of the episode shows that it is the corporate hierarchy of Wayne Industries who paid Mr. Payne and orchestrated Alfred's stabbing. The next step is to attempt to get rid of Bruce Wayne, showing how corrupt and unforgiving anything in the city is.
'GOTHAM' airs on FOX every Monday 8 PM ET.
