The League Season 6 Episode 4 Recap: When Rafi Met Randy
Vahan Shakhpazyan-VAVEL USA

On Wednesday evening, The League delivered yet another Rafi and Dirty Randy packed episode. Last year around this time, we saw an episode similar to the one on Wednesday. Last year’s episode ended with Rafi being shot by Dirty Randy. Wednesday’s episode resumed from the same spot, then flashbacked to when Randy and Rafi first met.

Rafi and Dirty Randy are really hilarious, but only in small doses. A full episode focusing on the both of them is just too much. Plus, it shifts our attention from the real plot, which is six friends playing in a fantasy football league. Dirty Randy and Rafi episodes are filled with childish, dumbed down jokes. There are usually a couple of humorous moments here and there in these episodes, but they are an absolute bore.

In Wednesday’s episode, in the flashback, we saw Randy accidentally kill his best friend and at the same time, Rafi’s family was killed as well. Then the show fast-forwarded to when both Randy and Rafi were inserted into a psychiatric hospital because they were both trying to commit suicide after losing people they loved.

Once in the psych ward, we got to see plenty of senseless scenes of Rafi and Randy enjoying electroshock therapy. Later, the two decided to escape the hospital with the help of other patients and the psych ward nurse, Spazz. The entire episode was filled with dry, elementary jokes and had an awkward feeling to it. Additionally, the plot was extremely unreal and simple.

While trying to escape, Rafi and Randy got busted. Then Randy was able to get out because he simply checked himself out of the psych ward. Rafi was too unwise to do the same, so he remained in the hospital to receive a lobotomy. However, while Rafi was preparing for his lobotomy, Dirty Randy returned to rescue him. Randy pulled Rafi out of a window and the rest of the patients jumped out the window also, and they all got away.

Simple, right? Yes, it was. It seemed like the writers wanted to take a break with this episode by conjuring up simple-minded scenes and a poorly written plot.

At any rate, once Randy rescued Rafi, the show fast-forwarded back to the scene where Randy shot Rafi. After a pointless fantasized moment where Rafi was being revived by a woman and was marrying her right afterward, the show snapped back to reality where Randy was giving Rafi mouth to mouth, trying to revive him. All of a sudden, Rafi propped up and was alive. What a miracle! A person who was shot near the heart came back to life. Of course the writers did not want to kill off Rafi, but they brought him back in the most unrealistic way possible.

Nonetheless, after an incredibly great episode 3, The League came back with a disappointing episode 4, unless you really enjoy watching a wasteful Rafi and Dirty Randy episode. The show should get back to fantasy football next week again and back to the characters most of us enjoy, which are Ruxin, Kevin, Taco, Pete, Andre, and Jenny.

Episode 4 - Overall Grade: 3/10

The League returns next Wednesday at 10 pm ET on FXX.
