The hype over FOX's new series 'GOTHAM' was through the roof, sure to be a hit given just the title. However, it'll take viewers a bit to get used to the new direction producers are taking the story of 'Batman'.

This is actually the story of James Gordon, during his young detective days with the GCPD. The first episode touched lightly on a few of Gotham City's nastiest criminals, the opening scene followed a much younger 'Catwoman', mediocre in her crimes, and throughout the episode 'The Penguin' is explored as Fish Mooney's loyal servant. The show takes a look at the corrupt underbelly of the city, not only criminal action but police corruption is made evident in the first episode.

A young, strong-headed detective Gordon wants to filter out all of the bad within the GCPD and the city, but finds it is harder to do than he initially thought. Bruce Wayne does appear in some scenes, and the initial scene with him and his parents will break your heart. The mood of the show was dark from start to finish, the colors used set the mood to very gloomy. Grays, blacks and dark blues are present throughout the premier and it gives light on how rough the city really is.

After one episode it's hard to say what the future will be for 'GOTHAM' but the idea is a good one.  While the story was a little hard to follow at times in the beginning, producers have a great product to work with. VAVEL gives the 'GOTHAM' series premiere an 8/10.
