'Batman' hasn't been on television screens as a series since Adam West starred in a series back in the mid-1960's. With fall shows set to come back in the next few weeks, FOX is airing a brand new series based on the crime filled, fictional city of Gotham.
The story follows James Gordon's early years on the Gotham City Police force, way before he became commissioner. A young Bruce Wayne has also been casted, giving the idea that this show might start with Wayne's parents passing. As great as the characters of Batman and James Gordon are, Gotham City is known for its criminal activity.
The series is set to explore not only Gordon's backstory, but also the backstory several of Gotham City's most dangerous criminals. Jada Pinkett Smith is set to play Fish Mooney, a character created specifically for this series. FOX Network describes Mooney as "a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner." Pinkett Smith also describes Mooney as a "very edgy woman with quite a temper." The character poses a new dynamic for producers to work with, and a new villain like this will be something to look forward to.
Of course, what's a show about Gotham City without some of its biggest criminals? The Penguin, Catwoman, the Riddler, the Joker, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange, and Harvey Dent are all set to be explored in the days before Batman came about. The villains can be the most interesting part of Gotham City if they are written properly and not out of character.
Creator Bruno Heller and his co-executive producer Danny Cannon have the opportunity to roll out one of the best shows on current television, if it's directed and written properly, 'Gotham' will easily be a hit show.
'Gotham' premiers Monday, September 22nd at 8/7c on FOX.
