Technology giant Apple took the world by surprise this past Wednesday when they unexpectedly announced the sixth generation iPod Touch. This addition to the Touch series is the first in almost three years, with the fifth generation being released October 11, 2012. Here's what's new about the next generation iPod.
External Features
The new iPod Touch comes in six colors (including Product Red), a few less than the previous generation, which came in eight. The colors include Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Pink, Blue, and Product Red. As for storage, the new Touch comes in 16, 32, 64, and 128 gb configurations.
Apple has also gotten rid of the minimally-used wristband loop this generation. The display remains the same 4 inches diagonally, with a 71:40 aspect ratio. It maintains the same weight of 88g.
Internal Features
This sixth generation iPod Touch advances from a 1GHz A5 chip to a 1.4GHz A8 chip, bringing massive improvements to the speed of the device. The CPU went from a dual-core to a quad-core, making for much faster performance all around. The RAM was doubled from 512MB to 1GB and upgraded from LPDDR2 to LPDDR3.
WiFi connectivity was upgraded from 802.11a to 802.11ac, and Bluetooth connectivity was upgraded to Bluetooth 4.1 from Bluetooth 4.0.
While the front camera is staying at a relatively small 1.2mp, the back camera got a huge upgrade from 5mp to 8mp, and also now features an LED flash.
The battery got a relatively small upgrade from being able to withstand seven hours of video playback to eight hours. However, with the new "low power" mode being introduced with iOS 9 (coming this fall), that should be a bit more manageable than before anyway.
The new iPod Touch starts at just $199 for the 16 gb version, $249 for 32 gb, $299 for 64 gb, and $399 for 128 gb.
