Scotland says "No"
Scotland says "No"

The Scottish people have voted unanimously voted against independence.

With a majority of 55%, the "Better Together" campaign has succeeded in maintaining Scotland's link to the rest of the United Kingdom.

Following the polling in Fife, where 139,178 people voted in favour of the "No" campaign, the official result of the 2014 Scottish Referendum was confirmed. After 31 of the 32 declarations where made, the "No" campaign received 1,914,187 of the total votes, while the "Yes" campaign had 1,539,920 votes.

The margin of victory was more than was expected in the lead up to the Referendum, due to constituencies such as Aberdeenshire voting, surprisingly, in favour of the "Better Together".

Alex Salmond has spoken with pride the campaign, citing the turnout as something for the country to be proud of:

"I think the process by which we have made our decision as a nation reflects enormous credit upon Scotland. A turnout of 86% is one of the highest of the democratic world, in any election or any referendum in history."

"We have touched sections of the community who have never been touched before by politics. These communities have touched us... I don't think that will ever be allowed to go back to business as usual in politics again."

Salmond concluded: "We shall go forward as one nation."
